Nuts – 1812 Style

During the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944 a German officer sent a rather lengthy demand for the surrender of the Belgian town of Bastogne. The American officer in command replied with a curt “Nuts” to this surrender demand.

One of the local stories goes that in May of 1814, Sir James Yeo appeared off the mouth of the Genesee and sent an officer, under a flag of truce, who was met by Capt. Francis Brown. The English officer stated that if the Americans would deliver up the provisions and military stores that might be in and around Rochester and Charlotte that Yeo would spare the settlements from destruction.

Capt. Brown’s response was: “Bloody knee deep first!”

Not quite as poetic as “Nuts,” but the sentiment was the same.
