Lieutenant Porter Hanks Lieutenant Porter Hanks was in command of Ft. Mackinac in 1812. Unaware that war had been declared; he was totally unprepared and was forced to surrender. Paroled at Detroit, he informed William Hull of the fall of Ft. Mackinac. On August 16, a British cannonball entered the fort, cutting Hanks in two.
