Lundy's Lane and the Niagara, July 1814 The regiment arrived at Buffalo on July 3rd moving on to Lewiston on July 6th, crossing the Niagara River into Canada on July 7th. At this time command of the regiment was turned over to Major Daniel McFarland. On July 11th the regiment attacked about 200 British troops about four miles from Queenstown at the village of St. David's and drove them off, capturing their stores. No casualties were reported in this engagement. Once again running low on ammunition, they returned to Ft. Erie, camping outside the walls for two days. Skirmishing and harassing the British continued as it had the previous summer, with little effect. About this time the 23rd Regiment was assigned to the 2nd Brigade commanded by General Ripley. This was the first time the regiment was gathered into a commanded force larger than itself. The American army was learning to organize. The 2nd Brigade marched to the village of Chippewa on July 23rd, arriving during night and was immediately attacked by a British force upon it's arrival.
