Irony 1812 Style On August 30, 1812 the Boston Patriot ran a front page news article: A British ship taken, dismasted, and burned! Recounting the naval action between the Frigates U.S.S. Constitution and H.M.S Guerriere. This famous engagement saw the victory of Captain Isaac Hull and the earning of the nickname Old Ironsides for the Constitution. A major morale builder , it signaled a major victory against long odds. The entire U.S. fleet had only 7 Frigates, while Great Britain maintained 100 ships in North American waters. On the same page, the Boston Patriot announced the surrender of the entire Northwest US Army at Detroit by General William Hull , Captain Isaac Hull's uncle. William Hull's forces outnumbered the British 2 to 1.
