Really Bad Generals William Winder was a disaster as a general, but the British opinion of our other generals was even worse. In a report on Winder, written by a British officer after his capture, he stated: "Be careful of exchanging Genl. Winder. He possesses more talent than all the rest of the Yankee Generals put together." Knowing what we know about Winder, that would make our other generals really bad. Either that or Winder was such a good lawyer he even got his captors to say nice things about him. Good lawyer, terrible general.
