First Raid on La Colle Mill, November 20, 1812 Colonel Zebulon Pike lead 600 regulars from Plattsburg to La Colle Mill, easily capturing the abandoned blockhouse. At dawn on the 21st a unit of militia sent to reinforce Pike opened fire on the blockhouse in the dim light thinking the occupying force was British. After exchanging fire for several hours, the mistake was realized, but only after friendly fire had caused 50 casualties. Now out of ammunition, Pike withdrew the entire force to Plattsburg for resupply, allowing the British to recapture the blockhouse.
