Detroit Problems By all accounts Hulls handling of the Detroit matter was disgraceful, but he wasn't helped at all by the majority of his troops. Several militia units had to be moved to Detroit at bayonet point. Once at Detroit, the entire Michigan militia refused to cross and they were joined by 100 to 150 of the Ohio militia (accounts differ.) All in all, Hull's army was reduced from 4,000 men to 1,300, with only 300 of those men being regulars. That put Hull's 300 regulars against 330 British and a fort. Then to make matters worse, two companies of Michigan militia deserted to the British! Little wonder that, after hesitating, Hull decided to withdraw.
