Too Deep

During the crossing of the Niagara River in 1814, Winfield Scott's forces landed at a ferry just north of Ft. Erie. Twenty British troops had been stationed at the ferry to prevent just such an occurrence. As the American's approached they opened up a murderous fire on the boats. Anxious to land and drive off the defenders Scott tested the depth of the water with his sword. Finding it about waist deep he shouted "follow me" and dove into the river.

He immediately sank up to his neck, cried out "too deep" and had to be dragged back into the boat for the remainder of the crossing.
