General James Monroe? James Monroe, who was a Major during the Revolution, lobbied hard to be appointed commander of the new Northwest Army after the defeat of General Hull. However, Henry Clay, a fellow Democrat, insisted just as hard to have westerner William Henry Harrison appointed.
