Battle of Kingston Harbor, November 9, 1812 On this date, an American flotilla followed the HMS Royal George right into Kingston harbor, and engaged the British ships and the harbor batteries for several hours. The Kingston Gazette described the battle: Early on Tuesday morning last, information was conveyed to town that seven American vessels, full of men, were approaching. At . . . about two o'clock they approached the town and were fired at from all our Batteries. They kept up a brisk fire . . . till after sunset . . . having done no other mischief than killing one man on board the Royal George . . . Persons of every age flocked into town from every quarter, eager to repulse the invaders . . . After this attack, Commadore Chauncey withdrew to Sackets Harbor, but he maintained a blockade at Kingston harbor until winter set in.
