HISTORY

Not just the US Militia

Canadians also had trouble with their militia . . . as well as fears about Native American attacks. In July 1812 Isaac Brock had attempted to muster 500 Militia at Long Point on Lake Erie to relieve Ft. Malden but there was an open mutiny. The men refused to march under Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Talbot to the fort. The reason given was that the wives of the troopers feared the Iroquois of the Grand River region . . . although Talbot himself was a bit of a disliked and suspect character.

In the end, the march had to be abandoned.
