Light Infantry Practice In combat light infantry worked in pairs, one man moving while being covered by the second man with a loaded musket. In an advance the pair moved forward, during a retreat they covered each other as they fell back. Some US units grouped their light infantry in groups of three men. The third man simply carried a loaded musket and loaded for the other two as the group moved and fired.
