Junior Officers

In combat, the center of each regiment contained the two most junior officers in the regiment each carrying the regimental flag (there were two) and with the regiment's field commanding officer directly behind them. The purpose of the flags was to mark the location of the commanding officer. This naturally made these two junior officers a prime target and their casualty rates were often the highest in any regiment.
