September 3, 1814 Maj. Joseph Mitchell and his wife where roused out of bed by a British landing party. The group carried the major off and shot his horses. He was then taken to England as a prisoner. The British had mistaken Mitchell for the Commissary General of Maryland. He was not. Mitchell was not able to return home until 1817.
