Change in Command

Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson arrives in Sackett's Harbor to assume over all command of all U. S. Armies after the resignation of Henry Dearborn. Originally ordered to act as Dearborn's senior advisor (March 10, 1813) that mission changed once Dearborn resigned. Upon arriving in Sackett's Harbor he immediate announced his plans to shift forces away from the Niagara region to gather them for an attack on Montreal.

Although a sound strategy, it was already too late in the year to organize such a relocation of forces. Sadly Wilkinson was also probably the worst replacement for Dearborn from all the available candidates and poorly suited to lead any major expedition.
