HISTORY

Chasseur

The Chasseur (16 guns) was a privateer built in Baltimore. In August 1814 it slipped through the British blockade and headed straight for England. The ship took or sank 17 vessels and then Capt. Thomas Boyle declared the British Isles to be under blockade by the Chasseur! He sent a shore party to Lloyds of London and had a proclamation to that effect posted on the office door.

Despite being declared a menace by the Royal Navy, which sent ships to deal with the Chasseur, it was never caught. And the ship returned to Baltimore on April 8th, 1815.

A copy of the Chasseur can be seen in Baltimore today, the Pride of Baltimore II.
