US Forces Withdraw From Canada August 11, 1812 On August 3rd, several paroled American garrison members reached Detroit by schooner, informing Hull of the Fall of Fort Mackinac. Hull had been holding war councils with his officers every day since crossing the Detroit rive on July 12th, however no action was taken, despite Hull’s officers clamoring to do so. Hull demurred, insisting that gun carriages of the army’s cannon be rebuilt. Officers even went to Hull’s second in command to demand that he step in and relieve the general. Sick from malaria, the officer refused on the grounds that he was not well enough to command. On August 11th, fearing an Indian rampage, Hull withdrew the army back into Fort Detroit, bringing the village civilians with him, creating an overcrowded state in the fort. |
