Brown Promoted to Regular Army

Few of the officers of the American militia were seen by 1813 to have much of any military value, but a small number did standout. One was Jacob Brown who managed to get militia forces to return to the defense of Sackett's Harbor in May 1813 and was generally charged with the port's successful defense. Far from perfect, Brown is correctly seen as at least one of the best the militia system had to offer.

The American army, in desperate need of determined officers, is served by one of Secretary of War Armstrong's few good decisions, with the appointment of Brig. Gen. Brown to regular army service.
