June 30, 1815 The last military event of the War of 1812 was an engagement between USS Peacock and the British East India Company Ship Nautilus, fought near the island of Java. Unaware that the war had ended, USS Peacock captured three English merchantmen. The Peacock's captain, Lewis Warrington, ignored the Nautilus's claims about the peace treaty and ordered his crew to open fire. Nautilus struck her colors after one broadside. The next day Java officials sent proof of the peace and the USS Peacock returned home.
