Burning of Hampton

On June 26th, the British attacked Hampton, Virginia using former French prisoners of war and burned the town. During this landing, a boat containing 17 men became stranded off shore; they were killed by the American defenders despite attempts to surrender. A British officer recorded the result of the attack on Hampton in his diary: "Every horror was perpetrated with impunity – rape, murder, pillage – and not a single man was punished."
