Benedict Raid

Capt. Robert Barrie writes in his report:

Arrived at Benedict here a party of regulars were stationed who fled on our approach leaving several Musquet(SP)s, Knapsacks and part of the Camp Equipage behind them, they also left a 6 pr. Field Piece which was spiked – The inhabitants deserted the Town and removed their Effects. – We found a Store containing about 360 Hogsheads of Tobacco.

[Note: A tobacco hogshead was a wooden barrel into which farmers packed cured tobacco for transport and storage. A very large wooden barrel, the standardized hogshead measured 4 feet high and 30 inches in diameter at the top. Fully packed with tobacco, it weighed about 1,000 pounds.]
