General's Orders Spoken orders were always delivered in the third person as was the custom of the day. Here's an example of a speech by Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mooers directly to his men. In this example the Major General he refers to is himself. Attention and good order are expected by the Major General and he would feel mortified to hear of any depredations on the inhabitants or ill usage to anyone, as the object in calling out the militia is for the purpose or repelling the enemy and protecting the citizens in their persons and property.
