Early War

The British were considering launching an attack on New Orleans . . . in April 1812, two months before the war broke out. Adm. Cochrane wrote, "Where the Americans are most vulnerable is New Orleans and Virginia." The British plan called for the capture of Mobile first, to use as a base of operations, before moving on to the mouth of the Mississippi River.
