Guns The preferred field weapon for the American army was the French 8-pounder. Although called an 8-pounder its actual size was 8.8 pounds, making it very similar to the British 9-pounder. Most batteries also contained a French 12-pounder. Both of these units used spoke field wheels. Dragoons used a 6-Pounder for support because of the ease of transport behind a team of horses. American forts and fixed positions also favored 24-pound naval guns. These guns used small solid wheels and were almost impossible to carry except by ship or disassembled. Some American emplacements also used 32-pounders, although these were so unusual, finding proper ammunition for them was a constant problem.
