British Raid Portsmouth, North Carolina

Adm. Cockburn sails south to examine the islands off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Moving at night as usual, he landed on Okracoke Island on July 11. The British captured the tiny hamlet of Portsmouth. Finding the vicinity without any major ports, Cockburn returned to Chesapeake Bay. Cockburn reported that he did no damage, but American papers charged that the British with looting the town. A small number of slaves made their way to Cockburn and his force.
