Kentuckians without Guns During the defense and battles around New Orleans about 400 militia from Kentucky arrived as reinforcements. As was typical for militia of the period, only 50% had muskets. Gen. Jackson, however, was shocked, stating out loud that he had never seen a Kentuckian that wasn't without "a gun, a pack of cards, and a jug of whiskey."
